Having Problems With Urinary Leakage?
Specialty Rehabilitation can help.
Accidental loss of urine is manageable, treatable
and may be reversible.
Urinary leakage is a health issue people are discussing
more openly and comfortably thanks to greater public
awareness about this condition, which affects nearly 17
million Americans. Urinary leakage is experienced by
people of all ages, although its incidence rises with age
and women are twice as likely as men to develop the
condition. If you experience accidental loss of urine from
the bladder, you do not have to live in shame, in constant
fear of accidents or embarrassing wetness or odor, or take
extreme measures to adjust your lifestyle. Urinary leakage
can be treated and managed successfully. Through the
outpatient Urinary Leakage Treatment Program at Specialty
Rehabilitation Inc., experienced therapists will work with
you to help restore your health and well-being, as well as
your dignity and independence.
Urinary leakage is not normal. Your physician can
help determine the cause.
Many causes of leakage are temporary and can be managed
with simple treatments. Causes include urinary tract
infections, menopause, surgery, enlarged prostate gland,
lack of postpartum exercises, acute illness and flare-up
of chronic illness. Other contributing factors include
constipation, various medications, obesity, and chronic
heavy lifting. You may benefit from Specialty Rehabilitation's
Urinary Leakage Treatment Program if:
-
You are a woman with urinary leakage and urgency due
to pelvic floor weakness from pregnancy and postpartum
period, hysterectomy, bladder surgery, prolapsed
bladder and/or uterus, or peri- or post-menopause.
-
You are a man facing
surgery for prostate cancer and want to learn
bladder care and pelvic floor exercise prior to surgery.
- You are a man with urinary leakage following
prostatectomy.
Once the cause of your problem has been determined, our
specially trained therapists will work with your physician
to personalize a treatment plan especially for you.
Treatment could be as simple as changing your
eating and drinking habits.
If you experience leakage only at night, treatment
could involve limiting your fluid intake after dinner and
avoiding caffeine and alcohol, which are diuretics.
Depending on your specific symptoms and the cause of your
leakage, other treatment options may include:
- Therapeutic exercises for the pelvic floor
- Biofeedback with neuromuscular re-education
- Development of a home exercise program
- Relaxation and breathing techniques
- Bladder training
- Instruction regarding proper diet
- Instruction in self management techniques
