Specialty Rehabilitation’s Program for Gynecologic Oncology
Who would benefit?
- A person who has received gynecologic surgery,
radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy with
limitations in some or all of the following:
- fatigue,
- poor endurance,
- changes in balance or coordination,
- persistent numbness in fingers and/or toes,
- core strength weakness,
- issues with urinary urgency or leakage, and
- changes in posture.
Program Goals:
- Improve strength and flexibility.
- Reduce symptoms of pain from peripheral neuropathy.
- Improve posture.
- Improve overall endurance and help combat symptoms of fatigue.
- Improve balance.
- Improve pelvic floor and core body strength.
- Reduce symptoms of urinary frequency and/or leakage.
- Reduce symptoms of post radiation scar tissue and swelling.
- Provide lymphedema precautions to persons receiving
lymph node dissections and/or radiation to groin lymph nodes.
- Independence with home program.
Treatment:
- General strengthening and endurance training.
- Massage techniques to reduce pain of peripheral neuropathy.
- Core body strengthening and postural retraining.
- Aerobic and cardiovascular retraining.
- Balance training.
- Biofeedback and neuromuscular pelvic floor retraining techniques.
- Massage techniques to reduce scar tissue tightness post radiation.
- Lymphedema prevention and, if indicated, treatment.
- Instruction on diaphragmatic breathing and energy conservation techniques.
- Instruction in home program to meet each person’s individualized needs.
